On October 28, the State Chancellery of Moldova launched public consultations on local government reform, which calls for the reorganization of 32 districts into the North, Central, and South regions and the establishment of a minimum threshold of 3,000 residents per municipality. Discussions on the draft law will involve representatives of local government, mayors, local council members, civil society, academia, parliamentary and non-parliamentary parties, and other stakeholders. On the first day, consultations were held in Briceni, Fălești, Drochia, Soroca, Hîncesti, Ungheni, Cahul, and Basarabca. In the coming days, they will take place in all district centers across the country. The consultations will conclude on November 5 in Chișinău. As a reminder, the previously submitted draft law provides for a new administrative-territorial map of the country, defines the powers of future regions, and changes the procedures for the organization and operation of local authorities. It is proposed that the Taraclia District be transformed into a second-level municipality, while Chișinău and Bălți will retain their current status, and the autonomous territorial entity of Găgăuzia will retain its special status. // 28.10.2026 — InfoMarket.
