Macroeconomics
• The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies forecasts Moldova's GDP growth at 1.90% in 2026, 2.70% in 2027 and 3.30% in 2028; inflation at 7.50%, 5.50% and 4.50%, respectively. In Q1 2026, GDP grew by 0.40% y/y, after 2.40% growth in 2025.
Energy and resources
• In July, Energocom purchased 308.87 thousand MWh of electricity at a weighted average price of 133.86 euros/MWh, versus 131.52 euros/MWh in June. Imports accounted for 75.26% of purchases and local producers for 24.74%.
• The Ministry of Energy is considering extending metrological inspection intervals for electronic electricity meters: three-phase meters are currently inspected every 4 years and single-phase meters every 8 years. Operators estimate potential annual cost savings of about 40.00 million lei excluding VAT per distribution operator.
External economy and trade
• Moldova's exports to the EU in January–May grew by 11.30% to 867.00 million euros, with the EU accounting for 62.99% of total exports; shipments to CIS countries rose by 5.40% to 84.10 million euros, while their share fell to 6.11%. Romania remained the largest EU market at 364.80 million euros, followed by Italy at 134.60 million and the Czech Republic at 116.70 million euros.
• Moldova is preparing a proposal to provide Ukraine with 20 locomotives and additional routes for the transit of Ukrainian cargo through Moldova to the Romanian port of Constanța. The parties are also discussing competitive freight rates and faster border crossings.
Government regulation
• As part of the 2027 tax policy, agricultural organizations are calling for VAT on agricultural products to remain at 8.00%; Speranța-Con opposes raising VAT on sugar from 8.00% to 20.00%, on sugar beets to 12.00%, and on certain fruits and vegetables to 12.00% or 20.00%. The draft remains under consultation.
• The Ministry of Finance proposes clarifying the calculation of four local fees — for retail and services, passenger transport, parking and advertising structures — and removing the fee exemption for funeral services. The changes are included in the 2027 tax policy package.
Investments and projects
• In July, 109.30 million lei was allocated to 92 local development projects in 91 localities; 59 projects were completed during the month. Phase II of the "European Village" program has 2.58 billion lei allocated from the state budget, while about 1.46 billion lei is allocated to 353 road projects under the "Europe Is Near" program.
• Energy audits were prepared for 25 apartment buildings with support from Denmark and UNDP: the full package of recommended measures is estimated at about 432.10 million lei and could deliver average energy savings of around 62.00%.
Banks and finance
• AmCham Moldova proposed that the NBM remove the 3-year restriction on audit firms auditing non-bank payment service providers and apply the rule established by law: one responsible auditor may audit the same organization for no more than 7 consecutive years, followed by a 2-year break.
Industry
• Südzucker Moldova's investments over 25 years exceeded 100.00 million euros; the company processed more than 11.00 million tonnes of sugar beets and produced about 1.50 million tonnes of sugar. Its domestic market share is estimated at around 70.00%, payments to farmers exceeded 6.00 billion lei, and contributions to the public budget exceeded 1.20 billion lei.
Business and companies
• In 2025, Imensitate increased revenue 2.60-fold to 12.48 billion lei, while net profit more than doubled to 529.20 million lei; the chain has more than 150 outlets. Tarol-DD increased sales by 22.20% to 1.70 billion lei, while net profit fell by 14.50% to 163.10 million lei.
Social economy
• Since the beginning of 2026, employment offices have helped place more than 15 thousand people in jobs — 60.00% of the annual target; more than 4.50 thousand of them had been unemployed. Community, social and personal services, agriculture, trade and manufacturing accounted for more than 76.00% of job placements.
• Education unions are demanding the promised salary increase from September 1: a picket of the government is planned for August 19, and nationwide protests have been announced from September 1 if no solution is reached. The government links the new wage law to approval of the tax policy and budget funding for the reform.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
• On August 12 at 10:00, the government will consider a package of economic bills, including partial liberalization of foreign-exchange regulation, a new investment law and amendments to legislation on industrial parks.
• The government agenda for August 12 also includes the reorganization of the State Enterprise Moldelectrica, the National Water Supply and Sanitation Development Program for 2026–2030 and the Aquaculture Development Program for 2026–2030.
