The government has approved the signing of the relevant loan agreement between Moldova and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for the "Moldova—Sustainable Water Supply (Irrigation) Project." Its estimated cost is approximately 130 million euros. Funding will be provided through loans and grants from the EBRD and the European Union via the Reform and Growth Facility for Moldova. As specified by Eugen Osmochescu, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, the funds will be disbursed in two tranches—49.8 million euros and 53.1 million euros—including grants (approximately 2.5 million euros) and concessional loans (totaling approximately 14.7 million euros), with the disbursement of the second tranche contingent on the results of the first tranche's implementation and the availability of feasibility studies. At the same time, approximately 3% of the funding will also be provided by 300 agricultural producers. The project provides for the rehabilitation and modernization of two irrigation systems in Moldova and the creation of conditions for the irrigation of approximately 6,900 hectares of agricultural land. The funds will also be used to strengthen the capacity of the responsible agencies and associations of irrigation water users. In the first phase, the "Căușeni Complex" irrigation system, located in the Ștefan Vodă district and serving approximately 2,000 hectares of farmland, will be rehabilitated. The modernized infrastructure will subsequently be transferred to the management of the "Kizil" Irrigation Water Users' Association. Irrigation infrastructure for an additional 4,900 hectares will be improved through the rehabilitation of the "Puhăcenii de Sus" system, located in the Criuleni and Anenii Noi districts. Subsequently, the system will be managed by the "Dubăsarii Vechi" and Aqua Terra Delacău Irrigation Water Users' Associations, depending on the territory served by each association. According to government data, nine projects to rehabilitate irrigation infrastructure are currently being implemented in Moldova. These projects are expected to increase agricultural productivity in the areas they serve by approximately 50% compared to the average over the past decade. // 07.10.2026 — InfoMarket.
