The Federation of Education and Science Trade Unions will hold a protest on August 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Great National Assembly Square. The union is demanding that the government fulfill its commitment to raise salaries for workers in the education and research sectors effective September 1, 2026. The National Confederation of Trade Unions of Moldova has expressed solidarity with the sectoral trade union and announced that its representatives and sectoral trade union centers will also join the protest. The unions are demanding a specific, government-approved schedule for wage increases, noting that no compromise has yet been reached during consultations and negotiations between the Ministry of Education and Research and the education union. As a reminder, the Federation of Education and Science Unions previously warned that if the pay raise is not implemented as of September 1, nationwide protests could begin in September. Going forward, the union does not rule out declaring a state of emergency in the education sector starting October 1, and on October 5—World Teachers' Day—it intends to hold a nationwide union action, including a boycott of official events. At the same time, government officials stated that teachers' expectations regarding salary increases are entirely legitimate, and finding a solution to this issue has become the Cabinet's top priority this week. According to the government's press service, the government has recently held several meetings to identify possible options and has promised to present the solutions it has found in the near future. // 18.08.2026 — InfoMarket.
