The government to propose the parliament declaring state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days

The government adopted this decision at an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu stated that the current events in the energy sector are no accident, and that Russia's attacks on Ukraine's civilian energy infrastructure have also impacted Moldova, as the overnight strikes led to the shutdown of the main power line supplying Moldova—the Vulcanesti-Isaccea line. Four alternative power lines with Romania have been activated, but the situation remains difficult. “Russia bears sole responsibility for this. In this context, the government is obligated to intervene promptly and responsibly. We will propose declaring state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days. This is not a measure of panic, but a measure of responsibility. It is a necessary measure for swift, coordinated action in the interest of the people,” stated Alexandru Munteanu. According to him, this afternoon, Prime Minister, along with ministers and those directly responsible for resolving the situation, will go to parliament to present all the necessary arguments and measures and to seek the support of members of parliament. “Our goal is clear: to take all necessary steps to ensure that every citizen is safe and has access to essential goods. Declaring state of emergency will allow us to act more quickly: to mobilize additional resources, protect critical infrastructure, and, if necessary, implement additional measures to limit the consequences of the crisis. We remain vigilant and are acting in the interests of every citizen’s safety,” Prime Minister stated. He urged citizens to obtain information only from official sources, noting that the Ministry of Energy would provide updated information later. // 24.03.2026 — InfoMarket.
