The cost of diesel fuel will reach its highest price in the last two years, which will hit farmers hard in the midst of spring agricultural work - Veaceslav Ionita
The economic expert noted that on March 10, the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) set the maximum price limit for diesel fuel at 23.59 lei per liter, which is the highest level in the last two years. The price was higher only in the fourth quarter of 2023, when the oil market was under pressure from global energy shocks. “The current increase is remarkable for the speed with which it occurred. In less than three months, diesel fuel has risen in price by 4.89 lei per liter, which is the largest increase in the last three years. At the same time, more than half of this increase — about 2.7 lei per liter — occurred in just the last seven days, indicating a sharp acceleration in price pressure,” the expert noted. According to him, the difficulty lies in the fact that this price increase hits farmers hard, right in the middle of the spring agricultural season. “In just a few months, the cost of diesel fuel for farmers has risen by more than 27%, which means higher costs for sowing, field work, and transportation. In agriculture, diesel fuel is one of the main production costs, and any price increase quickly translates into pressure on food prices,” the expert wrote in his blog, presenting a graph showing the high difference between the quarterly minimum and maximum, which means that the market is entering a period of high volatility. According to Veaceslav Ionita, such episodes occur when oil prices on international markets rise rapidly and logistical or geopolitical costs increase. At the same time, according to the expert, international trends indicate that this week may bring new daily price increases as wholesale fuel prices continue to rise. As for A95 gasoline, the increase is somewhat slower, but the direction remains the same: according to the expert, the oil market is entering a new wave of price increases, and the consequences will be directly felt by transporters, farmers, and, ultimately, consumers through rising costs in the economy. As a reminder, on March 10, ANRE set the maximum retail price for A95 gasoline at 24.82 lei (+1.1% compared to March 9) and for diesel fuel at 23.59 lei (+3.1%). // 09.03.2026 – InfoMarket
