Moldova and Romania will accelerate the implementation of joint road and rail infrastructure projects to fully integrate our country into European transport corridors and stimulate exports and economic development
This agreement was reached between Vladimir Bolea, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova, and Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu, State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania. The parties discussed a new approach to Moldovan-Romanian cooperation in transport infrastructure, with an emphasis on joint projects that will strengthen the two countries' connections and bring Moldova closer to the European transport network. Vladimir Bolea noted that in recent years, continuous and genuine openness has been achieved in Moldovan-Romanian relations in the field of infrastructure. "In the coming years, we want to translate this openness into concrete projects with tangible results for people and the economy. Our goal is to fully integrate Moldova into European transport corridors and thereby stimulate the country's exports and economic development," said the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova. The officials discussed priority areas of cooperation for the current year, with the aim of accelerating the implementation of joint road and rail infrastructure projects and creating more favorable conditions for the movement of goods and passengers between the two countries. In the area of railways, the opening of service on the Cantemir-Falciu section was discussed, as well as preparations for the resumption of service on the Cahul-Galati line on the Prut River, which is primarily designed for freight transport. The launch of a passenger train on the Cahul-Galati route was also discussed, which will improve the accessibility of the southern region of Moldova to the Romanian rail network. Concurrently, discussions focused on the commencement of work on the first section of the electrified railway between Iași and Ungheni and on Romanian authorities' support for the development of a feasibility study for the construction of a standard gauge railway from Ungheni to Chisinau. Among the topics discussed was the structural reform of the state-owned enterprise Moldova Railways, which will be divided into two separate entities to streamline operations and attract strategic investments. In the area of road infrastructure, the progress of construction of the road bridge across the Prut River in Ungheni, part of the new highway between Moldova and Romania, was discussed, along with its commissioning in the fall of 2026. Border infrastructure development was also discussed, with an emphasis on a common strategy for modernizing border crossing points between Moldova and Romania, as well as on the corresponding transport infrastructure to optimize traffic and reduce waiting times. In the area of river transport, the need to intensify cooperation on deepening the Prut River's navigable channel was discussed, with the aim of creating conditions for the resumption of river freight transport and exploiting the logistical potential of the coastal regions. Romania's support for Moldova's integration into European initiatives for financing and providing transport infrastructure, such as the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument, which will help facilitate Moldova's links with the European space and strengthen regional connectivity, was also discussed. // 19.01.2026 — InfoMarket.
