The Romanian electricity and natural gas market operator OPCOM will create and register a subsidiary in Moldova, which will become the operator of the electricity market in the Republic of Moldova.

The Romanian electricity and natural gas market operator OPCOM will create and register a subsidiary in Moldova, which will become the operator of the electricity market in the Republic of Moldova.

As noted in the OPCOM message, this decision was made at the general meeting of its shareholders in Bucharest in the context of the signing of a memorandum of agreement between the governments of Moldova and Romania on the implementation of projects necessary to unite the natural gas and electricity networks of the two countries on December 11 in Chisinau. According to this document, the parties decided to provide, among other strategic objectives, the conditions for the appointment of OPCOM as the electricity market operator in Moldova, including the electricity market operator appointed to integrate the electricity market from Moldova into the EU electricity market through market integration. It is planned that the strengthening of the strategic partnership between Moldova and Romania for the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the single European energy market, with direct and significant consequences for increasing the energy security of Moldova, will be facilitated by this project, which allows OPCOM, with the experience accumulated over more than 23 years of organization and management of the electricity market in Romania, contribute to the consolidation of the process of creating a fully functional energy market in Moldova, in conditions of integrity and transparency, and its accession to the single electricity market. At the same time, the appointment of the company, which will be registered in the coming days in Moldova, as the sole operator of the electricity market in the Republic of Moldova, will be further proof of OPCOM’s consolidated experience in managing energy markets by ensuring continuous, orderly, efficient, fair and transparent conduct of energy transactions and promoting the single market for the benefit of market participants and end consumers who benefit from the responsibility assumed by OPCOM since 2000 at national, regional and European level with the first unification of electricity markets, of which Romania has been a member since 2014. OPCOM is the operator of the electricity market and natural gas from Romania. Since 2000, OPCOM has been committed to strengthening a market environment where energy and environmental certificates are traded in a transparent and fair manner. The trading portfolio offered by OPCOM includes electricity and natural gas products, as well as green certificates. More than 800 companies use products available for trading in short-term electricity and natural gas markets, green certificate markets, as well as long-term markets for bilateral contracts for electricity, natural gas and green certificates. In addition to this role, OPCOM is responsible for the settlement of trades entered into in the short-term electricity markets and also serves as a registered reporting mechanism under REMIT, managing more than 350 data reporting mechanisms in the electricity and natural gas markets.// 14.12.2023 — InfoMarket.
