Our ambition is not only to join the EU, but also to participate in building Europe’s digital future - Alexandru Munteanu
The Prime Minister of Moldova made this statement at the opening of the 15th edition of Digital Summit 2026, one of the largest regional events dedicated to the digital economy, innovation, and technological transformation. The forum is taking place on June 5–6 in Chisinau and brings together about 2,000 participants—government officials, investors, entrepreneurs, researchers, IT sector leaders, and representatives of the digital ecosystem. In his speech, the Prime Minister emphasized that digitalization is not only a technological but also a strategic choice for Moldova, aimed at enhancing competitiveness, transparency, and sustainability, as well as accelerating European integration. He noted the progress achieved in the field of digitalization, pointing out that 78% of business services are already available in digital format, and that the IT sector, through the Moldova Innovation Technology Park, has generated exports worth over 1 billion euros. According to him, Moldova has also become one of the fastest-growing startup ecosystems in the region. As an example of convergence with the European digital space that has a direct impact on citizens, the Prime Minister cited integration into the “Roam Like at Home” regime, thanks to which the volume of mobile data used while roaming has increased by more than 300%. Alexandru Munteanu also highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in modernizing the economy and public administration. According to him, the next goal is to transform Moldova into the main GovTech hub of the Eastern Partnership, where technology simplifies public services, reduces bureaucracy, and accelerates administrative processes. “Our ambition is not only to join the European Union, but also to participate in building Europe’s digital future. Moldova is no longer a country that is merely trying to catch up with others. In many aspects of digital transformation, it is already beginning to set the pace,” the Prime Minister emphasized. He also stated that human capital remains the country’s top investment priority, as talent is becoming the most valuable resource in the digital age, and Chisinau is increasingly attracting the attention of investors, innovators, and international partners. In turn, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, who attended the event, stated that Moldova’s digital sector is an example of the successful realization of the country’s potential. “It is a symbol of the transformations we want to see in Moldova’s economy with the support of the Growth Plan—a sustainable path to prosperity for all. If Moldova is capable of creating digital companies that are competitive at the European level, there is no doubt that the same can be achieved across the entire economy,” noted Marta Kos. Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Eugen Osmochescu spoke about the economic impact of the debureaucratization program, which has saved over 264 million lei. He also highlighted the resilience of the national security architecture in the context of hybrid warfare, noting that national agencies successfully repelled nearly 1 billion cyberattacks over the past year. “We have proven that we possess the necessary flexibility and resilience to counter any threats. With a strong private sector and business-friendly legislation, we intend to complete the country’s digital transformation and strengthen our role as a reliable and secure partner on Europe’s eastern flank,” added Eugen Osmochescu. As part of the Moldova Digital Summit 2026, two days of networking sessions, thematic panels, practical workshops, and B2B meetings will take place. An exhibition area dedicated to technological innovations, startups, and international companies has also been organized. // 05.06.2026 — InfoMarket
