Moldova is participating in the New European Bauhaus competition for the first time and could receive up to €20,000 in funding to develop sustainable communities
Specifically, Moldova is participating in a European competition for ideas that transform communities. For the first time, our country is eligible for the New European Bauhaus (NEB) award, a European Commission initiative that recognizes beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive projects. Applications for 2026 are now open and can be submitted until March 17, with the possibility of receiving up to €20,000 in funding and international recognition. Through this competition, local participants receive European financial assistance, strategic mentoring, and international recognition, thereby contributing to the sustainable, inclusive, and community-oriented development of cities and rural areas. The NEB supports areas such as the circular economy and sustainable innovation, strengthening local democracy and social integration, the role of cultural heritage in transforming communities, and initiatives that accelerate the realization of NEB values. Projects must be submitted online via the official competition platform by March 17 (7:00 p.m. CET). Detailed information on the application process is available in the Participant Guide published on the platform. The 2026 competition will award 13 winners, including two prizes awarded by public vote, a special prize for water resilience, and one international prize dedicated to Japan and Brazil. Each winning project will receive up to €20,000, and the 14 other finalists will receive €5,000 each. Public voting will open during the third New European Bauhaus Festival, which will take place from June 9 to 13, and the winners will be announced at the NEB Awards ceremony in the fall. In addition to the cash prize, finalists will be able to participate in an acceleration program that includes strategic mentoring, personalized coaching, and communications support, which will be an important stimulus for the development and expansion of projects. This year, a special “Water Sustainability” prize will be awarded to projects that address water management issues, a topic that is also relevant to communities in Moldova. The New European Bauhaus Prize recognizes innovative projects and ideas that reflect the values of NEB: sustainability, inclusiveness, and beauty. Over the past five years, the competition has attracted more than 5,000 applications and awarded €1.54 million to 72 winners. The award inspires regions, cities, and towns to adopt NEB principles, encourages youth participation and intergenerational dialogue. The New European Bauhaus initiative, launched in 2021 following a call by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to the UK in 2020, links the goals of the European Green Deal to the everyday lives of citizens. Moldova's inclusion among the winners of the NEB 2026 award confirms the expansion of European cooperation and provides local communities with the opportunity to join international standards and networks. // 10.03.2026 – InfoMarket.
