Moldova will take measures to accelerate the achievement of the Copenhagen economic criteria to confirm its functioning market economy and readiness for integration into the EU internal market

This was discussed during a meeting of the working group responsible for the Economic Criterion, held by the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization. The event, chaired by Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Eugen Osmochescu, was attended by representatives of government agencies, the business community, academia, and civil society. The meeting emphasized that, with the start of EU accession negotiations under Cluster 1, "Core Values," achieving the economic criteria is a strategic priority, and the European assessment is increasingly focusing on the concrete results of reforms and their impact on the economy, the business environment, and citizens. Meeting the economic criteria is crucial to demonstrating that Moldova has a functioning market economy and is ready for integration into the EU internal market. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, the economic criterion reflects progress across a wide range of areas and reforms, serving as one of the key pillars of the national economy's ability to join the EU. The need to strengthen partnerships between government, business, and academia, as well as the importance of results- and impact-oriented reporting, were also emphasized. At the same time, it was confirmed that achieving the goal of EU accession requires the mobilization and contribution of all of society. Discussions focused on the implementation of the recommendations outlined by the European Commission in the 2025 Enlargement Report, such as maintaining macroeconomic stability and fiscal sustainability, implementing economic reforms and reforming state-owned enterprises, reducing informal employment, developing skills and adapting them to labor market requirements, increasing investment in infrastructure, and promoting foreign investment and innovation. In the near future, the responsible institutions will prepare a sectoral contribution to the European Commission for the 2026 Enlargement Report, focusing on the impact of reforms, the results achieved, and the measures needed to accelerate economic convergence with the European Union. The Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization confirms that it will continue to make consistent and coordinated efforts to ensure the structural modernization of the economy and the full implementation of the European integration program. By implementing structural reforms and maintaining an open dialogue with partners, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment to implementing the Copenhagen criteria and translating European recommendations into concrete results for citizens and the business community. // 17.06.2026 — InfoMarket.
