Moldova and Romania will expand cooperation to develop road transport infrastructure and receive preferential financing for these purposes from the EU
Specifically, Moldova will begin negotiations with Romania to sign an agreement on the construction, operation, and maintenance of transport infrastructure of strategic interest to both countries, including the Ungheni bridge across the Prut River. The Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy approved an advisory opinion authorizing our country's delegation to conduct these negotiations. The document will create the necessary framework for the implementation of infrastructure projects aimed at improving transport links between the two countries. Among them is a bridge between Ungheni in Moldova and the town of the same name (Ungheni) in Romania. The new agreement will replace the document signed in 2022, which served as the basis for initiating construction procedures for the border road bridge. It will also expand bilateral cooperation by introducing a coordinated border control mechanism, which will facilitate the optimization of cross-border traffic. The agreement will also facilitate access to preferential financing from the European Union. The project will be linked to the development of the final section of the A8 Targu Mures-Iași-Ungheni highway in Romania and the first section of the Ungheni-Chisinau-Odesa highway in Moldova. Concurrently, the development of an intermodal rail terminal in Beresti is planned. Connecting Moldova to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) is one of our country's priorities, and the Ungheni bridge will provide a direct connection to the Romanian motorway network and, indirectly, to European transport infrastructure. The project will facilitate the movement of people and goods, bring the two banks of the Prut River closer together, and create new opportunities for trade and economic development. After signing, the agreement must be ratified by Parliament. // 10.06.2026 – InfoMarket.
