At the same time, since the beginning of 2026, Moldova's total public debt has increased by 9 billion 844.3 million lei (+7.4%). It should be noted that the previous historical maximum of Moldova's total public debt was 138 billion 026.3 million lei and occurred at the end of February 2026. According to the Ministry of Finance, the growth of the total public debt in January-March 2026 was due to an increase in the domestic public debt by 4 billion 102.5 million lei (+7.9%) - from 51 billion 994.8 million lei (at the end of December 2025) to 56 billion 097.3 million lei (at the end of March 2026), as well as the external public debt, expressed in lei, by 5 billion 741.8 million lei (+7.1%) - from 80 billion 782.2 million to 86 billion 524 million lei. Herewith, the share of domestic public debt in the total amount of Moldova's public debt at the end of March 2026 amounted to 39.3% (a month earlier - 40.3%), and the share of external public debt - 60.7% (59.7%). In general, the share of total public debt in GDP at the end of March 2026 was estimated at 36.8% versus 37.4% at the end of December 2025. Moreover, by the end of 2025, GDP amounted to 353.52 billion lei, and in 2026 it is projected at 387.2 billion lei. The Ministry of Finance noted that at the end of March 2026, the share of public debt payable within 1 year amounted to 33.2% of the total volume, the share of domestic public debt in the total public debt was 39.3%. The share of public debt in specific currencies in total public debt at the end of March 2026 amounted to 41.8%, while the share of public debt with variable interest rates in total public debt at the same date amounted to 58.4%.
