Moldova intends to get an urgent loan from the EU to purchase and store approximately 400 million cubic meters of natural gas in order to provide the country with gas in January and February 2020
According to the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure, this was said during a meeting between the head of the Moldovan department Vadim Brinzan, President of the Republic of Moldova Igor Dodon and Deputy Director General for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Katarina Mathernová. The meeting was held in Brussels. The amount and terms of the loan are not reported. It is noted that the parties also discussed a number of other important issues for Moldova: ways to strengthen energy security; short and medium term energy development plans; investments in energy efficiency. They also discussed the idea of creating a natural gas storage facility in Moldova to ensure the country's energy security. At the same time, the parties also discussed the construction of a back-to-back station in Vulcanesti, a 400 kV transmission line for transporting electricity between Vulcanesti and Chisinau, as well as the expansion of the Chisinau-Vulcanesti converter station. In addition, Vadim Brinzan and Igor Dodon met with the Vice President of the European Commission, Commissioner for the Energy Union Maros Šefčovič. The main topics of discussion were: gas supply to Moldova next year; cooperation between the EU, Moldova and Ukraine to ensure the security of the reverse natural gas supply route through the Trans-Balkan pipeline from the Turkish Stream project; storage of natural gas in Ukrainian tanks.
