Moldova’s 2020 wheat harvest amounted to about 620-630 thousand tons, which will ensure its domestic consumption and provide an export potential up to 300 thousand tons of grain.
Prime Minister Ion Chicu stated this at a briefing on Monday after the traditional meeting of Moldova’s top leadership. According to him, in principle, despite the severe drought, this year's harvest, which is much lower than last year, will satisfy Moldova’s domestic consumption of both the first and second group cereals. The head of the Cabinet said that the wheat harvest this year amounted to 620-630 thousand tons, while domestic consumption requires about 350 thousand tons of wheat. Thus, about 300 thousand tons of wheat is the potential of its export. “We do not have a problem with the lack of grain, and there are proposals for the supply of wheat from Ukraine at comparable, acceptable prices,” Ion Chicu said. According to him, this year the corn harvest in Moldova will amount to 800 thousand tons with domestic consumption of 700 thousand tons. “Thus, the domestic demand for corn can also be covered by the new harvest,” the head of government said. He drew attention to the fact that this year the sunflower harvest amounted to about 400 thousand tons, and its domestic consumption is comparable to this volume. “On the whole, the grain harvest obtained this year, even if it was severely affected by the drought, allows Moldova to satisfy the domestic consumption of first and second group cereals,” Prime Minister said. // 14.09.2020 - InfoMarket.
